Perú (Virreinato)

"El Virreinato del Perú fue una entidad territorial situada en América del Sur, integrante del Imperio español y que fue creada por la Corona durante su dominio en el Nuevo Mundo, entre los siglos XVI y XIX. El inmenso virreinato abarcó gran parte del territorio de Sudamérica, incluida Panamá. Quedó fuera de él, también como bien realengo, Venezuela y Brasil, que sobre el océano Atlántico, pertenecía a Portugal. Sin embargo, durante el transcurso del siglo XVIII su superficie sufrió tres importantes mermas al crearse -con parte de su territorio- dos nuevos virreinatos de la corona española: el Virreinato de Nueva Granada y posteriormente el Virreinato del Río de la Plata. Al mismo tiempo el Brasil lusitano extendía sus fronteras hacia la Amazonia. A pesar de las pérdidas territoriales, todavía a principios del siglo XIX el virreinato del Perú era la principal posesión de la Corona española al tratarse de una de sus principales fuentes de riqueza. El virreinato peruano durante el proceso de independencia hispanoamericana se convirtió en el último bastión y centro realista en América del Sur, obligando al general rioplatense libertador José de San Martín a abandonar su empresa emancipadora tras establecer la República del Perú, hasta que bajo la división partidista, y sin auxilios de España, el virreinato sucumbió finalmente en las campañas decisivas del general grancolombiano Simón Bolívar, con el apoyo de las guerrillas peruanas y todos los recursos de logística de la sierra peruana, requisando todo lo necesario para una guerra de posiciones."

"The Viceroyalty of Peru (Spanish: Virreinato del Perú) was a Spanish colonial administrative district, created in 1542, that originally contained most of Spanish-ruled South America, governed from the capital of Lima. The Viceroyalty of Peru was one of the two Spanish Viceroyalties in the Americas from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. The Spanish did not resist the Portuguese expansion of Brazil across the meridian established by the Treaty of Tordesillas. The treaty was rendered meaningless between 1580 and 1640 while Spain controlled Portugal. The creation during the 18th century of Viceroyalties of New Granada and Rio de la Plata (at the expense of Peru's territory) reduced the importance of Lima and shifted the lucrative Andean trade to Buenos Aires, while the fall of the mining and textile production accelerated the progressive decay of the Viceroyalty of Peru. Eventually, the viceroyalty would dissolve, as with much of the Spanish empire, when challenged by national independence movements at the beginning of the nineteenth century. These movements led to the formation of the modern-day countries of Peru, Chile, Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago in the territories that at one point or another had constituted the Viceroyalty of Peru."
