"Zamboanga es una ciudad filipina cuya área metropolitana cuenta con 807,129 habitantes (2010). La ciudad tiene un área de 1.414,70 kilómetros cuadrados. La ciudad fue fundada en 1635 como fortaleza militar española contra los moro (Filipinas). Es conocida por su lengua, el Chavacano de Zamboanga o español-criollo. La ciudad tiene tres universidades importantes: el Ateneo de Zamboanga, la Universidad del Estado Occidental de Mindanao, y la recientemente creada Universidad de Zamboanga. Conocida como la Hermosa Zamboanga y la Ciudad Latina de Asia mantiene como lengua materna el chavacano, nombre que le dieron los españoles a una lengua, fruto del mestizaje, con diverso vocabulario castellano y sintaxis de las lenguas locales, parcialmente inteligible para los monolingües hispanos debido a que se asemeja bastante más al castellano que el inglés. Los que sean bilingües en cebuano y castellano entenderán el chabacano fácilmente. La ciudad es un crisol de pueblos. A los primeros pobladores se unen las etnias malayas que se implantaron posteriormente, con los mestizos y descendientes de la colonización española. También conviven pacíficamente musulmanes y cristianos."
"Zamboanga City (Zamboangueño Chavacano: Ciudad de Zamboanga) is a highly urbanized city located in Mindanao, Philippines. It has a population of {{#property:P1082}} people as of the census. Zamboanga City is the 6th most populous and 3rd largest city by land area in the Philippines. It is the commercial and industrial center of the Zamboanga Peninsula Region. Zamboanga City is an independent city, chartered and Zamboanga became an highly urbanized city on November 22, 1983, and not part of or was never part in any of the three provinces in Zamboanga Peninsula. Zamboanga City used to be known as Jambangan in the Subanon language and was the center of the Subanen culture during the pre-Hispanic times. After independence from Spain in May 1899, Zamboanga became the Republic of Zamboanga with Chavacano as its official language and Spanish as its co-official language. After American intervention, the republic was incorporated into the Philippines and became the capital of the Moro Province, now Mindanao, from 1903 to 1913. On October 12, 1936, Zamboanga City became a chartered city under Commonwealth Act No. 39. It was inaugurated on February 26, 1937, which was declared a local holiday.
