Sumario: El virus de la hepatitis Delta fue descubierto por inmunofluorescencia directa en los núcleos de los hepatocitos de pacientes con infección crónica por el virus de la hepatitis B. Es un agente transmisible que depende de una infección por el VHB para poder manifestarse y multiplicarse. A diferencia del VHB, es un agente viral que contiene RNA. La infección de los portadores del VHB con el antígeno Delta se asocia con hepatitis crónica progresiva y con hepatitis fulminante en un número significativo de casos. De la observación de casuísticas numerosas, la mayor parte de los estudios han demostrado la prevalencia de anticuerpos anti Delta en individuos HB5Ag positivos. Esta población anti Delta puede transmitir la infección por VHD ya que el RNA asociado al VHD ha sido encontrado en su suero.
