Resumen: El 13 de agosto de 1521, Cuauhtemoc, último tlatoani prehispánico de México-Tenochtitlan, fue apresado por García Holguín, capitán de uno de los bergantines que, durante 75 días, sitió la ciudad. Su captura supuso el final de lo que conocemos como imperio azteca. Aunque, en realidad, en esos dos años y medio que habían transcurrido desde que Hernán Cortéspisó los arenales de la futura Veracruz, su esfuerzo se centró en doblegar la ciudad de Tenochtitlan. Este dilatado espacio de tiempo, que a menudo se pasa por alto, sugiere que la conquista de la metrópoli azteca no fue un "paseo militar". Precisamente, lo que este dato pone de manifiesto es la complejidad de la sociedad que allí se desarrolló y que distaba mucho de parecerse a la que, hasta ese momento, los españoles habían encontrado en Santo Domingo, Cuba, etc.
