Resumen: El 1 de octubre de 1777 se firmó el tratado de San Ildefonso, y con ello comenzó para España un nuevo capítulo de su historia naval. En el acuerdo, Portugal cedió las islas de Fernando Poo, Annobón y ambos Elobeyes, así como el litoral entre las desembocaduras de los ríos Níger y Ogooué.
El interés geoestratégico de aquel enclave, que permitía un asentamiento en el sector oriental del Atlántico sur con un centro operativo en el virreinato del Río de la Plata, era indudable. Su aprovechamiento comercial y agrícola estaba por determinar.
La Armada española, avanzadilla exploradora de las posesiones de Ultramar, estuvo siempre presente, a veces cediendo el protagonismo en aras del servicio, pero engrandeciendo el nombre de España, que en ese momento
jugaba una partida estratégica en el tablero de África.
