Resumen: La moral de los soldados constituye un elemento básico para evaluar a un ejército en guerra, pero habitualmente resulta de difícil análisis, por no existir fuentes que lo permitan. Nos es posible abordar esta cuestión fundamental para las guerras coloniales de fines del siglo XIX. Lo permite el hallazgo de varias decenas de cartas enviadas a sus casas por soldados de Baracaldo que combatieron en Cuba y Filipinas entre 1895 y 1898.Este artículo analiza los posicionamientos de este tipo que realizó un colectivo amplio, de 74 soldados, en cartas privadas a sus familias o amigos. En conjunto, predominó la aceptación de la guerra, así como de los valores militares que ensalzaban la disciplina o la valentía, si bien pocas veces expresen nociones patrióticas. En todo momento los soldados creyeron en la victoria española. Ahora bien, desde el verano de 1897, cuando la guerra se estancó y estallaron las epidemias, en Cuba puede advertirse una incipiente desconfianza de la tropa.
