"Palawan (Pron. /plwn/, from Tagalog pronunciation: [palawan]), officially the Province of Palawan (Filipino: Lalawigan ng Palawan; Spanish: Provincia de Palawan), is an island province of the Philippines that is located in the Mimaropa region. It is the largest province in the country in terms of total area of jurisdiction. Its capital is Puerto Princesa City, but it is governed independently from the province. The islands of Palawan stretch between Mindoro in the northeast and Borneo in the southwest. It lies between the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea. The province is named after its largest island, Palawan Island (09°30N 118°30E / 9.500°N 118.500°E), measuring 450 kilometres (280 mi) long, and 50 kilometres (31 mi) wide. As of September 2016, Palawan Island is rated the "Most Beautiful Island in the World" as voted by respective readers of rival travel publications Conde Nast Traveller and Travel + Leisure. It is the second year running that Palawan has won the Conde Nast Traveller award, as well as the second time in four years that it has occupied Travel + Leisure's top spot (2013). El Nido, located at the northern tip of the island, is also currently rated the "Most Beautiful Beach in the World" by Conde Nast Traveller readers."
