Tiene alrededor de 1.200 km de norte a sur y 650 km de este a oeste, formando un área de 797.700 km². Su profundidad promedio es de 870 metros y el máximo llega a 3.777 metros. El principal río que desemboca en sus aguas es el Irawady. En su extremo sureste, el mar de Andamán comunica con el mar de China Meridional a través del estrecho de Malaca, que separa la isla de Sumatra de la península Malaya."

The sea has been traditionally used for fishery and transportation of goods between the coastal countries and its coral reefs and islands are popular tourist destinations. The fishery and tourist infrastructure was severely damaged by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami."
