Resumen: Trágicas jornadas se vivieron en 1921 en la Comandancia General de Melilla. Por un cúmulo de errores políticos, estratégicos, operacionales y tácticos, las tropas se vieron envueltas en una serie de sucesos que las desbordaron por completo. Muchos de estos errores, no se daban solamente en Melilla, ni siquiera en todo el territorio del Protectorado, sino en todo el territorio nacional. La inteligencia militar no era capaz de descubrir que más allá de la línea de contacto, se estaba formando un ejército nuevo, todavía reducido, pero muy diferente al harkeño irregular existente hasta entonces. Y de esta manera fue sorprendido el ejército de la Comandancia General de Melilla detenido desde enero de 1921, envuelto en centenares de confidencias y medio negociaciones, todas contradictorias. Tras la captura el 1 de junio de la posición de Abarrán guarnecida por una compañía de regulares y otra de policía, perdió a finales de julio una fuerte posición guarnecida por dos magníficas compañías de españoles en Igueriben. De repente toda la línea avanzada se vio amenazada. A la derrota de la columna de operaciones se unió la rebelión de la población de retaguardia al observar que las tropas que deberían defenderlas no solamente se retiraban, sino que daban una sensación de huida. Ya no había vuelta atrás. El desastre se había consumado. Entre todas las unidades que se vieron atrapadas en este cúmulo de errores, hubo una, que por sus características combatió reunida. Fue el Regimiento de Cazadores de Alcántara 14º de Caballería, su actuación como regimiento fue brillante
